the Art Guide
Buying art for your home can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience, but it can also be overwhelming if you're not sure where to start.
Here's a guide to help you navigate the process of buying and styling art.
Step 01
Consider Your Space
Think about the room where you want to display the art and take into account the size and scale of your room, furniture, and wall space. These factors will help you narrow down the types of art that will work best in your space.
step 02
Research Art Styles
Take some time to browse art online or visit galleries and museums to get a sense of the different styles of art that are available. Some popular art styles include abstract, landscape, portrait, and still life.
step 03
Choose A Color Scheme
If you have a specific color scheme in mind for your room, you may want to look for art that incorporates those colors. Alternatively, you can choose a piece of art that contrasts the room and catches the eye.
step 04
Determine Size & Placement
01. Measure Your Wall Space
Before you start looking for art, measure the wall or space where you want to hang it. This will give you an idea of the maximum size of the artwork that will fit in the space.
02. Consider the Scale of the Room
The size of the art should be proportional to the size of the room. In a small room, a large piece of art can be overwhelming, while in a large room, a small piece of art can be lost. Generally, a good rule of thumb is that the artwork should take up about 2/3 to 3/4 of the available wall space.
03. Think About the Furniture
Consider the furniture in the room when choosing the size of the artwork. A large piece of art should be hung above a piece of furniture that is proportional in size, such as a sofa or bed. If the artwork is hung on a blank wall, it should be centered and hung at eye level.
04. Use a Visual Aid
To help you visualize how a piece of art will look in your space, use a visual aid such as a paper cutout or a digital rendering. This can help you determine the appropriate size and placement of the artwork before putting any holes in your walls.
05. Create a Gallery Wall
If you have a collection of smaller pieces of art, consider creating a gallery wall. Group the pieces together and arrange them in a way that creates a cohesive look and fits your wall space. You can also mix and match different sizes, frames and styles of art and photos to create visual interest and a curated look. It's typical to have 2"-3" of space between frames.

step 05
Frame & Hang Your Art
If the art is not already framed, consider having it professionally framed to protect and enhance the piece.
When hanging the art, make sure to use the appropriate hardware and follow the instructions carefully to ensure that the artwork is secure and level. The vertical center of the piece should hang 57" above the ground or around eye level.
